ABOUT OUR FAMILY-RUN KENNEL AND RACING TEAM

FROM IDITAROD TRAILS TO BACKCOUNTRY TOURS – BUILT BY MUSHERS, FOR MUSHING

At Susitna Sled Dog Adventures, mushing is our life’s work. Rohn and Alyssa, co-founders and lifelong mushers, have shaped their careers—and their home—around sled dogs.

Rohn, a Kuskokwim 300 and Knik 200 champion, was born into Alaska’s racing scene. Named after the Rohn Roadhouse checkpoint of the Iditarod, his identity and professional journey are tightly woven with sled dog racing. He has multiple Iditarod finishes under his belt and a long-standing dedication to trail integrity, dog care, and racing excellence.

Alyssa’s passion began in childhood—she built harnesses for her pets before she even reached school age. Her early commitment evolved into an unrelenting dream: to build a home where sled dogs would thrive. She accomplished that dream with years of effort, and now co-leads every tour and training session alongside Rohn and their children Kaladin and Elowen.

Together, they’ve created a place dedicated to the training and care of their sled dogs, blending tradition with the spirit of adventure.

Rohn to Nome

We are excited as Rohn and the team are gearing up to run the 2026 Iditarod! We have a full season of races planned! To learn more about the Iditarod and the rest of our races go to Rohn to Nome.

Our tours are always guided, intimate, and rooted in true Alaskan mushing.

Every sled ride with us is fully guided by our experienced, professional mushers. From the moment you arrive, you’re welcomed into our team—never left to navigate alone. Our handlers, who have trained and cared for these dogs from puppyhood to professional athletes, will be with you every step of the way.

We believe that the heart of the experience is connection. Throughout your adventure, you’ll have the chance to interact with our friendly sled dogs, learn their unique personalities, and create unforgettable memories together.

For your safety and enjoyment, all sleds are expertly guided. This allows us to share our knowledge and ensure every guest feels comfortable, confident, and cared for.

Anchorage is the nearest airport and cruise port, and Talkeetna is easily accessible by road or regional flights.

LIFE AT

OUR KENNEL

Life at the kennel revolves around our dogs. Tours and training runs fill our days, with every moment centered on caring for our canine athletes.

Guide with sled dog and visitors

Our training philosophy emphasizes positive reinforcement, ensuring that our dogs are motivated by joy and excitement. Whether it’s a short tour or a 6-hour training run, we strive to make every experience fun and fulfilling for the dogs. We foster self-motivation, where the dogs work not because they have to but because they genuinely enjoy it. From massage and foot care to tailored meals, we provide everything our dogs need to thrive on the trail.

Musher with sled dogs at night race

Preparing for races involves running the dogs over many miles to build their aerobics and physical fitness. We focus on specific types and lengths of runs, as well as simulating race conditions with campouts and nighttime runs. These activities are separate from our tours, as training runs are longer and more intensive than most visitors would typically experience. While tours are about sharing the mushing lifestyle, race training ensures our dogs are ready for the challenges of competition.

Sled dog team running

Our daily routine is rigorous yet rewarding. Mornings begin as early as 5:30 or 6:00 AM, feeding the dogs and cleaning their areas before preparing for tours or training runs. During the day, we care for the dogs, clean up after them, and ensure they have water and attention. Tour days involve prepping sleds, greeting guests, and giving our dogs opportunities to interact with people. On training days, we focus on getting the dogs ready for races. Evenings are spent wrapping up care, cleaning, and preparing for the next day. From 6:00 AM to 8:00 PM—and often beyond—we dedicate our time to the dogs.

OUR MISSION AND MUSHING FUTURE

Rohn and Alyssa continue to race, train, and mentor in Alaska’s competitive mushing scene. As Rohn prepares for his next Iditarod in 2026, the kennel is growing in experience and reach—but never in mass. We remain intentionally small, deliberately personal, and forever committed to the sport and lifestyle that shaped us.

Join us on the trail. Join us in spirit. Support the legacy of mushing with every ride you take.

THESE EXPERIENCES SHAPE WHO WE ARE AS MUSHERS AND DRIVE PASSION FOR SHARING ALASKA’S DOG TRADITIONS WITH YOU

With three Iditarod finishes, numerous mid-distance race victories, and over a decade of hands-on experience, Rohn and his team embody authentic sled dog expertise. His impressive racing résumé includes events like the Knik 200, Yukon Quest Alaska 300, Kuskokwim 300, and Denali Doubles. In 2012, Rohn’s dedication and growth in the sport earned him the “Most Improved Musher” award in the Iditarod. Despite his extensive achievements, his passion for mushing continues to deepen with every race.

Together, they’ve created a place dedicated to the training and care of their sled dogs, blending tradition with the spirit of adventure.

One of Rohn’s most memorable moments came during an Iditarod finish. As Rohn climbed Cape Nome in the final 30 miles, the Northern Lights danced above, the huge orange full moon set on the horizon, and the sun began to rise – a perfect picturesque culmination of the challenging race.
